penang, the city with “best street food”?

Just read online where Time Magazine recently crowned Penang as the city with “the best street food in Asia” and it got me thinking.

No doubt, my growing up years in Ipoh exposed me to endless yummy street food which I took it for granted. Only when friends or strangers commented “this and that” tasted so yummy, that I began to take note of. Just like the “fau foo fah” at Funny mountain, Ipoh, is the silkiest I have ever tasted, so far. Just google “funny mountain” and I can guarantee 100% satisfaction.

Coming back to the title as the city with “best street food”.  No doubt I do miss the “greasy and pork crackle laden char kway teow, garnish with chinese sausage and “kou choy” but I have grown to accept those offered in Singapore. Though it’s slightly sweet but that’s how it is done in Singapore.

Yeah, there’s ongoing debate as to who started “bak kut teh” but my take is, this is how it is done in Singapore and that is how it is done in Malaysia. I guess there is no right or wrong in cooking; as long as it tastes good, why not?

Then again, I don’t think I will ever can stomach dry noodle done with ketchup as the main sauce. To me, ketchup is not a sauce. Just my personal opinion though.

p/s I love the “kway chap” on my first try and will have my fix occasionally 🙂

Merry Xmas and a happy and prosperous new year

It’s time of the year, again.

Time to extend your arm wide enough to hug your love ones. To embrace them with love and tell them how much they meant to you.

It’s the time of the year, again to call your long lost friends to renew the bond you once had with them.

It’s time to don the apron and cook for those who matter to you most; it does not matter how it taste as long as you enchance the food with love. That’s the main ingredient.

Merry Xmas and a happy new year.

honey, it’s me

Yeah, honey it’s me. That’s the latest iphone application developed in Korea, to combat loneliness for single men.

I do not know what to feel when I read this in the newspaper a few days back. In fact, I recall I didn’t feel anything. I remembered being stumped for words.

Maybe I did let out a faint giggle.

From what I gathered, once the lonely men download the application, the virtual girlfriend “Mina” will be making video calls at intervals, to the users, asking from “are you still sleeping?” to “good nite, sweet dream”. Naturally, most liked being called upon by “Mina” and felt wanted, instantly.

According to news, almost 80,000 downloads were done during it’s initial free phase but once the service provider starts to charge for the download, the figures dwindled drastically! And the charge was a mere USD1.99!

Yeah, honey it’s me

i will always remember you, Wendy

Yes,  that unmistakeable red haired girl with freckles. That oh-so-smooth frosty. And not to mention the square shaped burgers.

Recently, we decided to have breakfast at Wendy’s at the newly opened outlet at Tampines  mall and we didn’t see it coming. Slow service, that is.

I accompanied Celeste while Shin and Carment were tasked to get the breakfast. It took a good 30 minutes or so before we can actually see food on the table. The person who took the order could not comprehend what was being ordered.

I can see staff moving around fast. And that’s all. Moving around fast but making no progress to get food ready. And the worst part is, you can see some of the staff in the background were chatting away, could not give a hoot as to what was happening at the front.

That’s the painful part. Waiting.

Now the funny part.

A woman came exactly at 11am and she was bluntly told that breakfast menu served until 11am only. She mumbled that the waiting was long and did her best impression of a sour plum and stormed off!

Now, the irritating part.

We decided to get frosties (that’s the main intention, though) and I volunteered to get the orders. I queued up patiently and in front of me, were 3 girls chatting happily away. Obviously they are good friends, from the giggling and pushing, I can figure that much.

When it came to their turn, instead of going together to order food from 1 station, the 3 of them ordered separately. Meaning, they  hogged 2 other counters, so to speak. I can’t fanthom but I deduced it to them not willing to pay for other meals..but hey, can’t one of you pay first and then split the cost?

Well, that’s life.

Maybe they are not friends at all.
