Pasar malam essentials

Without fail and with utter confidence, Celeste will remind me to get her “steamed sweet corn” from pasar malam (night market). Every thursday, that is.

As for missus, she can’t do without apom; local wafer thin crepe made from rice flour and coconut milk batter.

For me, its always the battle between fried carrot cake and baked salted chicken. Recently, the owner of the baked chicken stall shared an anecdote with me. He mentioned that men prefer to buy from him as compared to others.

Why? Apparently, his fowl has aphrodisiac effect on manhood!! Wow!! That’s great news as it’s cheaper than having to get tongkat ali or even the blue pill..

The verdict? The fowl did not turn me into Casanova.

Morning date with Pocoyo & friends

Pocoyo and friends

Pocoyo and friends

Who is Pocoyo actually? Pocoyo is a rather fun and mishievous little boy with lots of friends, or rather unorthodox friends.

You see, his friends are actually animals of different colorful characters and the whole bunch of them never fail to mesmerize Celeste every mornings.

Who are these friends? Let’s get acquainted with them now;
Ellie, a pink elephant who loves to dance given any opportunity. Vain
Plato, a yellow duck who wears a green bowler hat at all times.Joker
Lula, an orange dog who bounces all the time rather than walk. Best friend
Sleepy bird, errr sleepy all the time
Baby bird, related to sleepy bird
Caterpillar, the yellow caterpillar who wear a blue ribbon

You matter most to us, Celeste

We glide through our daily life without giving much thought of happenings surrounding us. Things that matter to us once, start to get out of focus into the background. We dont make an attempt to keep abreast with the latest happenings to our love ones.

I came across an artwork done by Celeste at school and didnt give much thought about it. When asked, I told Celeste that I love it very much. It made her proud.

The artwork were put aside, gathering dust until yesterday. I had a long look at it and the artwork brought smile to my face.

I am sure you will agree with me. Parenthood is great

The passing of a great storyteller..

Great storyteller

Great storyteller

Yasmin Ahmad passed away over the weekend due to internal bleeding of the brain. Everyone was caught by surprise by her demise.

Though I dont know Yasmin Ahmad personally, but I am sure most of us can relate to her “muhibbah” Petronas commercials, where they showed Malaysians  can live with each other harmoniously, albeit of different races and religious beliefs. They were often short parables about malaysian lives that make us cry and laugh but they also gently nudged us to ponder on ourselves.

While reading the star newspaper today, I read that one of her close friends regretted of not having kept in touch or make an effort to visit her despite their work places are just next to each other.

The person took it for granted thinking that the late Yasmin Ahmad will be around for a long time until news of her death gripped the headlines.

I guess everyone of us at some point of time, do take things for granted; assuming that it will never happen to us.

We played pretentious mind games

We gave excuses

We lied to ourselves

We comforted ourselves into believing that we have plenty of time to do what we are suppose to do for our love ones. Until the day comes.

Life is no doubt short, but lets make it a journey memorable enough to share with our love ones.

Rest in peace, Yasmin

p/s One of my favourite commercial by Yasmin for Merdeka celebration was “Tan Hong Ming in love”. In a nutshell, this little chinese boy was in love with Umi, a malay friend of his. When asked, Tan said he doesnt want Umi to know as he was afraid the whole world would laugh at him. Then when Umi was asked, she declared that Tan is her boyfriend. Expression on Tan’s face was so innocently delighted! Check out youtube.

Moral of the story? Children are colour blind. They dont care what race you are from. I guess us adults have much to learn from children. Learn to love each other and make humanity cool again

Wolverine I am..so i wish

Who wants to be a superhero? I for one, wish i was Man of Steel aka Superman during younger days. Then again, the thought of having to wear spandex on the outside finally diminished as I grew older. And wiser. That is until Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine clawed into silver screen.

Literally, to my humble opinion Hugh Jackman is Wolverine. Though i am a bloke, i so wished i have physique like him.

Hugh’s physique was so animal-like in Wolverine. I guess he really worked his derrier off, to achieve the desired effect as Wolverine.

Wolverine doesnt need a cape to save the world. He has his adamantium claws to do justice, and of course his self-healing capabilities. He is generally depicted as a loner and considered to be an anti-hero because of his willingness to use violence as adjuncts to his trade craft.

His long running catchphrase best sums up his personal philosophy, ” I am the best there is at what I do, but what I do isn’t very nice”.

"What I do isn't very nice"

"What I do isn't very nice"

I for one, wish there will be more Wolverine movies, instead of X – men (getting jaded)

Donnie Yen, you rock!

Bruce Lee was my childhood hero. Now its Donnie Yen. I would not miss movies with Donnie in it. Why?

Of all the current kung fu / action movie stars, I prefer Donnie’s way of fighting. Be it a punch or a kick, Donnie sets himself apart from others. Then agian, this is only my humble opinion and i am entitle to it.

I was elated when Ip Man, the movie won the best film in recent Hong Kong film festival. And Donnie played the title character effortlessly. Of course, I do know for a fact that he hardly execute his famous aerial kicks but his execution and interpretation of Wing Chun moves were simply out of this world. Awesome.

Recently my wife told me that Donnie is quite an accomplished pianist himself!

Now, who say martial artists are all brawn and no brain?

One verdict. Go watch this movie if you are a fan of Donnie.
